Why do I overthink everything?

Overthinking is very common and can affect people in different ways. Whilst it may feel like a habit of the mind, it is often the mind attempting to create safety by predicting, analysing, or controlling what feels uncertain.

The mind moves through different scenarios or internal scripts as a way to restore equilibrium or guide action. In this process, we can begin to mistake thoughts for facts, when in reality they are filters, shaped by our beliefs and past experiences.

These patterns of thinking are closely linked to the body. As thoughts activate certain perceptions, the nervous system responds, often moving into a more alert or unsettled state. This then creates a feedback loop, where increased activation leads to more thinking in an attempt to stabilise the experience.

Rather than trying to stop thoughts directly, this work focuses on the underlying state driving them. It invites a shift towards awareness of the body and the nervous system, learning to relate to these signals as meaningful information rather than problems to fix.

As the system becomes more regulated and grounded, the need to overthink naturally begins to soften.

Clarity does not come from thinking more. It emerges when there is enough space and awareness for the system to settle.
